## Trust

### *The Inner Sense That Life Is Fundamentally Safe and Workable*

### What This Life Energy Actually Is

Trust, as a Life Energy, is not blind optimism.

It is not the belief that everything will turn out well, that the diagnosis will resolve, or that the future is guaranteed.

Those are hopes.

And hopes are precious.

But they are not Trust in the sense we mean here.

Trust, at its most fundamental, is the **felt inner sense that life is workable**.

That you have what is needed to meet what comes.

That the ground beneath you will hold, even when you cannot see what is ahead.

That the intelligence moving through your body, your instincts, your accumulated wisdom, and the web of life supporting you is, in some deep and not always rational sense, *on your side*.

It is a relationship.

Not with a guaranteed outcome.

With the process of being alive itself.

And like all relationships, it can be damaged, neglected, rebuilt, and deepened.

The practice of Trust as a Life Energy is the practice of returning, again and again, to the evidence that life has met you before — and the felt sense that it is meeting you now.

### Trust and Serious Illness

There is perhaps no Life Energy more profoundly tested by a serious diagnosis than Trust.

The body that was trusted has, in some sense, surprised you.

The future that was assumed has become uncertain.

The medical system asks you to trust its processes while often leaving you feeling like a file number rather than a person.

And the deeper existential question — *can I trust life itself, given what life has done?* — sits beneath many sleepless nights.

This is worth naming honestly.

**A serious illness can shatter trust at multiple levels simultaneously**.

Trust in the body.

Trust in the future.

Trust in other people.

Trust in the sense that the universe is, in some larger way, coherent and kind.

The rebuilding of Trust is not a return to naivety.

It is something harder-won and more durable than that.

It is the Trust that comes from having been through difficulty and discovering, perhaps to your own surprise, that you were met.

That something in you held.

That resources appeared.

That the body kept going in ways you did not expect.

That people showed up.

That moments of genuine beauty and aliveness continued to occur, even inside the hardest chapters.

That is the Trust we are working with here.

Not the Trust that preceded the difficulty.

The Trust that is forged within it.

### The Layers of Trust

Trust as a Life Energy operates at several levels simultaneously.

It helps to name them clearly.

#### Trust in the body

The capacity to be in relationship with the body as an ally rather than an adversary.

Even a body navigating illness is doing extraordinary things on your behalf every moment.

Learning to recognise and appreciate that, to feel into the body's faithfulness even in difficulty, is one beginning of restored bodily trust.

#### Trust in the self

The felt sense that your own perceptions, instincts, and inner knowing are reliable.

That you can trust what you feel.

That your experience is real and valid.

That the inner voice that says *something is important here* or *this is right for me* is worth listening to.

For people who have spent years in systems that prioritise external expertise over inner knowing, this layer of trust is often one of the most depleted.

#### Trust in others

The capacity to allow others to be trustworthy.

To bring discernment rather than either naive openness or protective closure.

To recognise the people and communities where trust has actually been earned.

And to allow yourself to rest in that.

#### Trust in life itself

The deepest and most philosophically tender layer.

The felt sense, however quiet, that existence is not fundamentally hostile.

That there is an intelligence or coherence or natural order to things that, while it does not guarantee outcomes, is not indifferent to you either.

For many people this is the layer that serious illness most directly challenges.

And the layer that, over time, this wider practice may most deeply restore.

### What the Body Feels When This Need Is Met

These are the somatic signatures of Trust arriving — the body's language for *I can rest into this*:

* **A settling deep in the belly** — the gut relaxing chronic guardedness; the core softening; the centre of gravity dropping lower and becoming more stable
* **A release in the diaphragm** — breathing that goes all the way down, no longer stopping partway; the breath trusting the body enough to go deep
* **A quality of rootedness in the feet and legs** — the lower body feeling substantial, connected, grounded; gravity becoming an ally rather than something being resisted
* **An opening across the upper chest** — the protective closing around the heart area releasing; a sense of more room at the front of the body
* **A quieting of the scanning mind** — the background checking, monitoring, and anticipating easing; the future becoming less urgent; this moment becoming more sufficient
* **A sense of inner coherence** — the felt sense that the different parts of you — body, mind, emotion, inner knowing — are oriented in the same direction, not pulling against each other
* **Warmth at the centre** — often felt in the solar plexus or heart area; the felt sense of an inner resource that is available; something that has been there the whole time, waiting to be recognised
* **The quality of surrender without collapse** — not giving up, not resignation, but the kind of ease that comes from releasing the white-knuckle grip on control and discovering that something underneath was already holding you

### Six Memory and Imagination Prompts

#### 1. 🌱 The Evidence of Being Met

*Recall a genuinely difficult period in your life — one that felt, at the time, unsurvivable. Notice that you are here. You made it through. Resources appeared. Something in you held. People showed up, or inner strength surfaced, or the body kept going, or a door opened that you could not have anticipated. You were met — perhaps not in the way you wanted, but met nonetheless. Rest in the evidence of that. Your life is full of moments when Trust was warranted, even when it did not feel possible.*

**Felt Sense Prompt:** Where in the body does the recognition of having been met again and again live? Is there a steadiness, a groundedness, a quiet confidence beneath the story? Let that felt sense come forward now.

#### 2. 🫀 The Body's Faithful Showing Up

*Bring your attention to the fact that your body has been working on your behalf, without pause, for every moment of your life. The heart beating. The lungs breathing. The immune system navigating extraordinary complexity. Even now, especially now, your body is doing things of staggering sophistication in your service. It has not abandoned you. It is still here, still working, still faithfully present to the task of keeping you alive. That is Trust made biological.*

**Felt Sense Prompt:** Can you feel, in the body right now, the quality of something working faithfully on your behalf? Where does that felt sense of being served by your own biology live? Let yourself receive that for a breath.

#### 3. 🌊 Surrendering to What Is Larger

*Recall or imagine a moment in nature — or in music, or in any experience of something vast — when you felt yourself release into something larger than your individual self. The ocean holding you. The night sky making your worries small and strangely manageable. A piece of music carrying you somewhere your own thinking could not reach. In that moment, something in you trusted — not a person, not an outcome, but the sheer fact of being held by something larger. That feeling is Trust in its most elemental form.*

**Felt Sense Prompt:** Where in the body does the felt sense of being held by something larger live? Is there a release, an opening, a sense of the self becoming less tightly bounded? Let that quality of release be as full as it wants to be.

#### 4. 🧭 Trusting Your Own Knowing

*Recall or imagine a moment when you listened to your own inner knowing — your instinct, your gut sense, your quiet inner voice — even when external voices were saying something different. And you were right to listen. The inner knowing was trustworthy. It had information that the external voices did not have, because it was living inside your experience in a way nothing external could. Notice what it felt like to trust yourself — and to be met by your own reliability.*

**Felt Sense Prompt:** Where does trust in your own inner knowing live in the body? Is there a clarity, a steadiness, a sense of alignment? Let that place in you be recognised right now.

#### 5. 🕊️ The Moment Resistance Released

*Recall or imagine a moment when you stopped fighting something — a situation, a feeling, a reality you had been resisting — and simply allowed it to be what it was. Not giving up. Not collapsing. But releasing the exhausting effort of resistance and discovering that underneath it was something you could actually stand on. A kind of ground that the resistance had been obscuring. The moment the white-knuckle grip loosened and you discovered you were, in fact, held.*

**Felt Sense Prompt:** What does the body feel like in the moment resistance releases? Is there a heaviness, a warmth, a sudden tiredness that is also a relief? Let your body remember that quality of release right now.

#### 6. 🌟 The Unexpected Resource

*Recall a moment when something appeared — a person, an opportunity, a piece of information, an inner resource, a sudden clarity — that you could not have planned or predicted, that arrived precisely when it was needed. Not because the universe is a vending machine, but because when we are genuinely open and present, resources become visible that anxiety and resistance had been obscuring. That arrival, however small, is evidence. Evidence that life, in some workable sense, meets us. Rest in that evidence.*

**Felt Sense Prompt:** Where in the body does the memory of that unexpected arrival register? Is there a warmth, a sense of wonder, a quiet gratitude? Let that feeling be fully present for a breath.

### Trust as a Practice, Not a State

One of the most liberating things to understand about Trust as a Life Energy is that it is not something you either have or do not have.

It is not a permanent state that some people are blessed with and others must go without.

It is a **practice**.

A capacity built incrementally through the repeated experience of turning toward it.

Every time you notice the evidence of having been met and let it land in the body, you are building Trust.

Every time you feel into the body's faithfulness and receive it as real, you are building Trust.

Every time you release the grip of control, even slightly, even for a breath, and discover that you are still held, you are building Trust.

The practice is cumulative.

And it compounds.

A nervous system that has repeatedly experienced Trust — through felt memory, through imagination, through the quiet evidence of continuity — begins to orient toward Trust as a default rather than an exception.

The scanning eases.

The bracing softens.

The present moment becomes more available.

And from that more available present, the other Life Energies — Play, Beauty, Belonging, Purpose — become genuinely accessible in ways they could not be when the system was locked in vigilance.

Trust is not the destination.

It is the inner weather that makes the journey possible.
