## Presence

#### *The Gateway Life Energy*

***

### Begin Here

Of all twelve Life Energies, Presence comes first.

Not because it is the most dramatic or the most immediately satisfying.

Because without it, the others remain *ideas* rather than experiences.

You can think about Play.

You can understand Beauty.

You can believe in Belonging.

But until you are *here*, in your body, in this breath, in this moment, those energies pass through you like light through glass.

Bright, but not warming.

Real, but not felt.

Presence is what closes the gap between knowing and feeling.

It is the ground.

Everything else grows from it.

### What Presence Actually Is

Presence is not concentration.

It is not stillness.

It is not the absence of thought.

It is the simple, radical act of **being where you are**.

Allowing this moment, this body, this breath to be the whole of your attention, just for now.

Not the appointment next week.

Not the conversation this morning.

Not the body you had before, or the one you are hoping for.

*This* one.

*Here*.

Neuroscience calls the mind's default wandering state the **Default Mode Network**.

The brain's background narrator.

Constantly replaying the past and rehearsing the future.

It is useful.

It is also exhausting.

Research consistently shows that when this network dominates, when we are lost in time and lost in story, our sense of wellbeing falls, cortisol rises, and the body remains in a low-level state of alert.

The present moment is perpetually missed.

[Research on the Default Mode Network](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3541485/)

Presence practice, the deliberate, gentle return to *now*, directly quiets this network and strengthens the brain's capacity to rest in current experience.

Over time, with practice, this is not just a momentary relief.

It can become a new neurological default.

A nervous system that knows how to come home.

### Why Presence Is the Gateway

Every other Life Energy in this work is accessed through the body, in real time.

Joy is not a memory of joy.

It is joy *felt now*, even if the feeling is sparked by a memory.

Belonging is not a concept.

It is a warmth *felt now* in the chest.

Safety is not a logical conclusion.

It is a settling *felt now* in the belly and the breath.

The body only exists in the present moment.

It cannot feel the past or the future.

It can only feel *now*.

[Somatic awareness and the present moment](https://www.somatopia.com/blog/the-anatomy-of-presence-how-body-awareness-reveals-the-now)

This means that Presence, the capacity to inhabit now, is not one practice among twelve.

It is the **container** in which all twelve become real.

It is the skill that transforms this work from intellectual exercise into genuine, felt, transformational experience.

When you arrive in Presence first, everything that follows lands differently.

The memory you recall feels alive rather than distant.

The imagination you enter feels vivid rather than forced.

The gratitude that arises moves through you rather than sitting on the surface.

The Life Energy you are working with becomes something your body actually receives, not just your mind acknowledges.

This is why we begin here, every time.

And this is why, even after you have moved through all twelve Life Energies, you may find yourself returning to the Presence practices again and again.

They are the ground.

### What the Body Feels When Presence Arrives

These are the somatic signatures of Presence.

The body's own language for *I am here*:

[Somatic awareness and interoception](https://www.therapyroute.com/article/understanding-felt-sensations-the-importance-of-somatic-awareness-and-interoception-by-h-bello)

* **A deepening and slowing of the breath**
* **A softening behind the eyes**
* **Weight dropping into the sit bones or the soles of the feet**
* **A release of the jaw**
* **Warmth spreading through the chest**
* **A slowing of inner time**
* **A quiet hum of aliveness**
* **The absence of the next thing**

This last one is perhaps the most distinctive signature of Presence.

Not what arrives.

What temporarily falls away.

The silence where the narrator used to be.

### A Note for Those With Serious Illness

When you are living with a diagnosis that requires constant management, appointments, medications, decisions, and monitoring, the present moment can feel like the most dangerous place to be.

It is where the body's reality lives, unedited.

Where pain might be felt more clearly.

Where uncertainty cannot be reasoned away.

This is worth naming honestly.

**Presence is not always immediately comfortable**.

For people carrying significant physical or emotional weight, arriving in the body can initially bring the full felt sense of what the body is carrying.

This is not wrong.

This is not a reason to stay away.

When you arrive in the body with *compassion*, which is what these practices are designed to support, what meets you is not only pain.

It is also the warmth still present in your chest.

The breath is still moving, reliably, in and out — without instruction.

The aliveness that persists beneath the difficulty.

The body's extraordinary, uncelebrated loyalty to your life.

Presence, practised with kindness, does not amplify suffering.

It holds it.

And in holding it, it creates the conditions in which it can begin to shift.

### The Life Energy of Presence Guided Practices

Each of the audio practices below is ten minutes long.

They are designed to be used once a day for five days before moving into any other Life Energy work.

You do not need to be sitting up straight.

You do not need to be pain-free.

You do not need to be good at meditation.

You only need to press play and allow yourself to be guided.

### **Practice 1** — The Space Around the Breath

This first practice asks very little of you. You don't need to empty your mind, achieve perfect stillness, or feel anything in particular. You only need to find a comfortable position and follow along best you can. The presence unfolds on its own.

We begin not with the breath itself, like most practices do, but with the space *around* the breath. Even when we are carrying these great life and death decisions and challenges in our cells, there is always somewhere spacious to rest. My hope is that these daily practice helps us all find that precious space, know it, and appreciate it's healing power.

10 minutes. No experience necessary.

*When you are ready, move to the Life Energy that is calling you most.*

*Or follow the unmet need. That quiet ache is a signal, not a failure.*
