# The Felt Science of Thriving Overview

## The Felt Science of Thriving

### You Already Know This

You have felt it.

A moment when something clicked into place.

Not in your circumstances.

Inside you.

A lightness in your chest.

A warmth spreads through your belly.

A breath that came easier than the last.

A quiet, private sense of: *yes. This. I am alive.*

That feeling is not random.

It is not luck.

It is not reserved for people with easier lives or healthier bodies.

It is information.

It is your body's intelligence speaking in its most fluent language.

The language of felt experience.

And it is the foundation of everything in this section.

**Titled the 'Felt-Sense Prayer'**

> I am the pain in your head, the knot in your stomach, the unspoken grief in your smile.
I am your high blood sugar, your elevated blood pressure, your fear of challenge, your lack of trust.
I am your hot flashes, your cold hands and feet, your agitation and your fatigue.
I am your shortness of breath, your fragile low back, the cramp in your neck, the despair in your sigh.
I am the pressure on your heart, the pain down your arm, your bloated abdomen, your constant hunger.
I am where you hurt, the fear that persists, your sadness of dreams unfulfilled.
I am your symptoms, the causes of your concern, the signs of imbalance, your condition of dis-ease.
\
> You tend to disown me, suppress me, ignore me, inflate me, coddle me, condemn me.
I am not coming forth for myself as I am not separate from all that is you.
I come to garner your attention, to enjoin your embrace so I can reveal my secrets.
I have only your best interests at heart as I seek health and wholeness by simply announcing myself.

You usually want me to go away immediately, to disappear, to sleek back into obscurity.
You mostly are irritated or frightened and many times shocked by my arrival.
From this stance you medicate in order to eradicate me.
Ignoring me, not exploring me, is your preferred response.
More times than not I am only the most recent notes of a long symphony, the most evident branches of roots that have been challenged for seasons.

So I implore you, I am a messenger with good news, as disturbing as I can be at times.
I am wanting to guide you back to those tender places in yourself,
the place where you can hold yourself with compassion and honesty.
If you look beyond my appearance you may find that I am a voice from your soul.
Calling to you from places deep within that seek your conscious alignment.

I may ask you to alter your diet, get more sleep, exercise regularly, and breathe more consciously.
I might encourage you to see a vaster reality and worry less about the day to day fluctuations of life.
I may ask you to explore the bonds and the wounds of your relationships.
I may remind you to be more generous and expansive or to attend to protecting your heart from insult.
I might have you laugh more, spend more time in nature, eat when you are hungry and less when pained or bored, spend time every day, if only for a few minutes, being still.

Wherever I lead you, my hope is that you will realize that success will not be measured by my eradication, but by the shift in the internal landscape from which I emerge.

I am your friend, not your enemy. I have no desire to bring pain and suffering into your life.
I am simply tugging at your sleeve, too long immune to gentle nudges.
I desire for you to allow me to speak to you in a way that enlivens your higher instincts for self care.
My charge is to energize you to listen to me with the sensitive ear and heart
of a mother attending to her precious baby.

You are a being so vast, so complex, with amazing capacities for self-regulation and healing.
Let me be one of the harbingers that lead you to the mysterious core of your being
where insight and wisdom are naturally available when called upon with a sincere heart.

### What This Section Is

**The Felt Science of Thriving** is a body of work built at the intersection of neuroscience, somatic awareness, and the lived experience of people who have discovered, often through serious illness, that thriving is not the absence of difficulty.

It is an active, daily, felt practice of meeting the life energies that make us most alive.

It is written for people who are done waiting for circumstances to change before they allow themselves to thrive.

And it is grounded in something that science now clearly confirms.

**The felt experience of a life energy being met, even in memory or imagination, is neurologically real.**

Your brain builds the architecture of thriving from the inside out.

This is the practice.

***

### When Survival Becomes the Dominant Mode

When the body is under sustained medical threat, the nervous system narrows its focus.

Survival becomes the dominant frequency.

The subtler Life Energies — Play, Spontaneity, Beauty, Presence — can recede.

Not because they are gone.

Because the system has deprioritised them as luxuries.

They are not luxuries.

Their consistent absence can be felt as a progressive narrowing of the sense of being alive.

It can also be understood in terms of stress physiology, immune strain, and reduced neuroplastic flexibility.

Restoring these energies, even through imagination, even in small and quiet moments, is not separate from healing.

For people who have lived at the edge of surviving modern-day oncology and know what that can give and take, this felt-sense practice can become a form of precision medicine in its own right.

It works directly with the body's own vibrational intelligence to help create the inner conditions that make healing more possible.

### The Twelve Life Energies

#### What Are Life Energies?

Every human being is born with a set of universal needs — not preferences, not privileges, but **biological and psychological necessities** as real and as vital as oxygen. These needs were mapped and named through decades of work in Nonviolent Communication (NVC), pioneered by Dr Marshall Rosenberg. They include things like Play, Spontaneity, Beauty, Presence, Contribution, Connection, Rest, and Integrity — and when these needs go unmet, something in us dims.

We call them **Life Energies** here, because that is precisely what they are. Each universal human need, when met, generates a specific, felt aliveness in the body — a warmth, a lightness, a brightness, a sense of expansion. Each one carries its own **somatic signature**, its own frequency. And when they are consistently met — even in imagination — they do not merely improve our mood. They restructure our nervous system, shift our neurological architecture, and send a profound signal to the body's deepest intelligence: *life is available here. I am not only surviving. I am alive— I am thriving.*

At the heart of this work is a simple map starting with:

**Twelve universal Life Energies** that, when met, or when consciously recalled and felt, generate the conditions for genuine, sustained thriving.

These are not goals.

They are not performance metrics.

They are living needs, as real and as biological as sleep or warmth.

When they are flowing, we are well.

#### Each Life Energy has its own section here.

Each one includes:

* **An overview** of what the energy is and why it matters for thriving
* **The body's felt signature** — the somatic sensations that tell you this energy is alive in you
* **Memory and imagination prompts** — vivid, guided entry points for accessing the felt sense of this energy being met
* **Guided audio practices** — ten-minute presence-centred reflections you can download and return to across a week, gently building the neural pathways of this energy into your daily life

### The Twelve Life Energies We Begin With

Use this list as both the framework and the navigation for the section.

Start with the first three.

Then follow what feels most alive, most absent, or most needed.

#### Start here

1. [**Presence**](/myhealingcommunity-docs/the-felt-science-of-thriving/the-felt-science-of-thriving-overview/presence.md)\
The capacity to fully inhabit this moment.\
The foundation from which all other Life Energies are accessed.
2. [**Safety (Psychological & Emotional)**](/myhealingcommunity-docs/the-felt-science-of-thriving/the-felt-science-of-thriving-overview/safety-psychological-and-emotional.md)\
The nervous system's prerequisite for growth.\
Without felt inner safety, all other Life Energies remain inaccessible.
3. [**Empathy**](/myhealingcommunity-docs/the-felt-science-of-thriving/the-felt-science-of-thriving-overview/empathy.md)\
   Beginning with self-empathy.\
The act of turning toward your own inner experience with full, non-judgmental presence.

#### The next energies

4. [**Trust**](/myhealingcommunity-docs/the-felt-science-of-thriving/the-felt-science-of-thriving-overview/trust.md)\
The inner sense that life is fundamentally safe and workable.\
Cultivated first as a relationship with oneself.\
Trust in one's own perceptions, body, and inner knowing.
5. [**Support**](/myhealingcommunity-docs/the-felt-science-of-thriving/the-felt-science-of-thriving-overview/support.md)\
The felt experience of having others show up — practically, emotionally, or simply by being present — in a way that eases the weight of what is being carried.
6. [**Beauty**](/myhealingcommunity-docs/the-felt-science-of-thriving/the-felt-science-of-thriving-overview/beauty.md)\
Activates the brain's reward circuitry through aesthetic experience.\
One of the fastest routes to transcendence and felt expansion.
7. [**Play**](/myhealingcommunity-docs/the-felt-science-of-thriving/the-felt-science-of-thriving-overview/play.md)\
Signals to the nervous system that life is not only threat.\
Activates endorphins and dopamine, the body's most direct route to felt aliveness.
8. [**Spontaneity**](/myhealingcommunity-docs/the-felt-science-of-thriving/the-felt-science-of-thriving-overview/spontaneity.md)\
   Restores free-flowing thought.\
Directly linked to creativity, joy, and neurological resilience.\
An antidote to the narrowing that illness can impose.

#### Still to come

9. [**Safety (Physical)**](/myhealingcommunity-docs/the-felt-science-of-thriving/the-felt-science-of-thriving-overview/safety-physical.md) *(coming soon)*\
   The body's baseline.\
The felt sense that the physical self is held, not in danger, and able to rest.
10. [**Purpose**](/myhealingcommunity-docs/the-felt-science-of-thriving/the-felt-science-of-thriving-overview/purpose.md) *(coming soon)*\
The lived sense that your presence here matters.\
That your energy, attention, and care are moving toward something meaningful.
11. [**Movement**](/myhealingcommunity-docs/the-felt-science-of-thriving/the-felt-science-of-thriving-overview/movement.md) *(coming soon)*\
The primal aliveness of a body in motion.\
The felt sense that energy can flow, shift, and express itself through the physical form.
12. [**Belonging**](/myhealingcommunity-docs/the-felt-science-of-thriving/the-felt-science-of-thriving-overview/belonging.md) *(coming soon)*\
The knowledge that you are part of something.\
A group, a lineage, a community of shared experience that would notice your absence.

The neuroscience: why imagination is not "just" imagination

Here is the cornerstone idea that underpins this practice:

your brain does not treat vividly felt memory and imagination as trivial.

When an experience is vividly remembered or imagined with sensory detail and bodily feeling, many of the same neural regions involved in direct experience can become active again.

That is why a remembered or imagined Life Energy can still feel real in the body.

It is not pretend.

It is not bypassing reality.

It is a real act of neural and somatic participation.

The broader research direction here points to several important findings:

* imagination can produce neurologically meaningful effects
* vivid mental simulation can activate overlapping perceptual and emotional networks
* the brain can learn from imagined experience in ways that resemble learning from lived experience
* positive felt imagery can shape expectation, attention, and motivational pathways very quickly

This is why the practice works through felt recall rather than abstract affirmation.

The body responds most strongly when the experience is not merely described, but sensed.

#### Research directions mentioned here

The section draws on research themes associated with:

* CU Boulder

### Presence Comes First — Here Is Why

Every practice in this work begins with **Presence**.

The felt capacity to inhabit *this* moment, *this* body, *this* breath.

Not the diagnosis.

Not the future.

Not the story.

Here.

Now.

Presence is the gateway Life Energy because without it, the others remain ideas rather than experiences.

You can *think about* **play** without feeling it.

You can *know* you **belong** without letting it land.

Presence is what closes the gap between knowing and feeling.

It is the skill this entire body of work gently, repeatedly trains.

The guided audio practices for Presence come first.

They are your foundation.

Many people return to them again and again, even after moving into other Life Energies, because they are the ground from which everything else grows.

***

### How to Use This Section

**There is no right order** except that Presence comes first.

After that, follow what calls you.

Notice which Life Energy feels most alive, or most absent.

Both are valid entry points.

A Life Energy that feels *absent* is not a failure.

It is a signal.

It is your system saying, "This matters to me." *I am ready for more of this.*

**The weekly practice rhythm**, if you want one:

* Choose one Life Energy per week
* Read the overview and body sensations section slowly
* Sit with one Memory or Imagination Prompt per day for five days
* On each of those five days, listen to the corresponding guided audio practice
* At the end of the week, simply notice: *what has shifted in my felt sense?*

No journalling required.

No reporting.

No performance.

Just noticing.

### A Note on the Science

Throughout this section, you will encounter references to neuroscience research on imagination, somatic memory, and the nervous system's relationship to thriving.

These are here not to make the work feel clinical, but to offer permission.

Many people, especially those navigating illness in a medical system that privileges the measurable over the felt, need to know that what they are experiencing is real.

That it is not wishful thinking.

And that the felt sense of a life energy being met is doing something genuinely biological.

It is.

The research is clear and it is growing.

You will find it woven lightly through each section.

Enough to anchor you.

Never enough to pull you out of your own experience.

Your body is the laboratory.

And thriving, your particular, embodied, irreplaceable version of it, is what we are here for.
