# Sourcing Quality

Not all Ashwagandha products contain meaningful WFA exposure. For oncology use, the sourcing question is not cosmetic. It determines whether the product even matches the biology being discussed.

### What makes a product coherent?

#### 1. Plant part must be explicit

Leaf extract is the relevant starting material for WFA-standardised oncology products. Root extract is the usual base for adaptogenic Ashwagandha products and typically contains much less WFA.

A root extract standardised to total withanolides is not the same as a leaf-derived WFA-standardised product.

#### 2. WFA standardisation must be explicit

The label should state WFA content, not just total withanolides.

This distinction is critical. Total withanolide percentages can look impressive while actual WFA content remains modest.

#### 3. Delivery system must be defined

Given WFA's poor standard oral bioavailability, a product without a delivery system is hard to take seriously for oncology use.

Look for a named formulation approach such as:

* liposomal
* pro-liposomal
* chitosan-phospholipid liposomal

For more context, see [Liposomal Encapsulation of Anti-cancer Compounds](/myhealingcommunity-docs/natural-medicines/liposomal-encapsulation-of-anti-cancer-compounds.md).

#### 4. Third-party testing must be available

A credible product should be able to show batch-level confirmation of:

* actual WFA content by `HPLC`
* heavy metal testing
* pesticide screening
* microbiological safety

#### 5. Dose transparency matters

The product should clearly state WFA exposure per capsule or serving. If the label forces readers to infer it indirectly, that is a quality warning.

### The biggest buying mistake

The most common mistake is buying a standard adaptogenic root extract such as KSM-66 or Sensoril and expecting oncology-relevant WFA activity.

Those products are built for stress, sleep, and broader adaptogenic use. They are not interchangeable with high-WFA, oncology-oriented formulations.

A second common mistake is buying a leaf extract without a defined delivery system. High nominal WFA content in a powder does not guarantee useful plasma exposure.

### Withaferin A Quality markers

| Feature | What to look for |
| ----------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Plant part | Leaf extract specified |
| Standardisation         | Explicit `% WFA`, not just total withanolides                          |
| Delivery system | Liposomal, pro-liposomal, or similar strategy clearly named |
| Dose transparency | WFA mg per capsule or serving stated |
| Certificate of analysis | Batch-level `HPLC` verification available                              |
| Heavy metal testing | Arsenic, mercury, lead, and cadmium below limits |
| Pesticide screening     | Multi-residue screen or equivalent                                     |
| Microbial testing | Absence of key pathogens confirmed |
| Classification | Practitioner-guided or clinically supervised positioning is preferable |

### Bottom line

> If the product does not name the plant part, does not state WFA content, and does not explain the delivery system, it should not be assumed to match the evidence base for WFA in oncology.\

> **See** [**W section in our Trusted Suppliers and Discounts page**](https://myhealingcommunity.gitbook.io/myhealingcommunity-docs/cancer-patient-community-supports/trusted-suppliers-and-discounts#w)\
> **for the only WFA product available worldwide that meets all the criteria.**

**IMPORTANT:** <mark style="color:violet;">Please do not assume that any “ashwagandha” supplement will provide oncology‑relevant WFA exposure. This page was created to highlight Withaferin A‑focused targets, and specialised WFA‑standardised leaf extracts are required, not general ashwagandha root products. ## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://myhealingcommunity.gitbook.io/myhealingcommunity-docs/natural-medicines/withaferin-a-wfa-in-oncology/sourcing-quality.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
