# Sourcing Quality Shikonin

{% hint style="warning" %}
Shikonin is a category where raw ingredient quality, standardisation, and formulation matter more than label confidence.
{% endhint %}

Shikonin is usually derived from *Lithospermum erythrorhizon* root bark.

The source plant matters.

The extraction method matters even more.

### What matters before price

1. Clear standardisation to **shikonin**, not only total naphthoquinones
2. Third-party identity and contaminant testing
3. Transparent plant origin and extraction method
4. A delivery system that addresses solubility, if the goal is meaningful exposure
5. Stability testing where possible, because quinone compounds can degrade

### Why standardisation matters

Root powders and loose herbal extracts can vary widely.

That makes “traditional-use” sourcing a poor guide if the real goal is repeatable exposure.

Shikonin is not a category where vague herbal equivalence is enough.

### Practical product note

The one liposomal shikonin product currently on the market is **MCS Formulas Liposomal Shikonin**.

MCS address the bioavailability problem with a liposomal delivery approach.

# Agent Instructions: Querying This Documentation

If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter:

```
GET https://myhealingcommunity.gitbook.io/myhealingcommunity-docs/natural-medicines/shikonin-in-oncology/sourcing-quality-shikonin.md?ask=<question>
```

The question should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
