# Usnea Tincture

Usnea is the fungal-defence targeting layer in this protocol.

### What usnea is

Usnea, or Old Man’s Beard, is a lichen that contains usnic acid.

This guide positions usnic acid (UA) as a bridge between antifungal and anticancer logic.

For anyone keen to explore the anti-cancer mechanisms, see [Usnic Acid / Usnea in Oncology](/myhealingcommunity-docs/natural-medicines/usnic-acid-usnea/usnic-acid-usnea-in-oncology-overview.md). That section unpacks the broader oncology evidence around usnic acid.

### How it works in this guide

Usnic acid is presented as targeting 14-3-3 proteins.

These proteins act as master regulators in many cancer cells and are also important for fungal virulence and invasion.

### Why that matters

When 14-3-3 function is disrupted, usnic acid may help:

* reduce fungal virulence
* shorten hyphal growth
* reduce toxin output
* weaken persistence mechanisms
* interfere with aggressive survival signalling in abnormal cells

### Why does it come early in the sequence

Usnea is not presented as the main direct-kill step.

It is framed as a weakening step that makes later antifungal pressure more effective.

### Dosing notes

**Suggested range:** 100–300 mg usnic acid daily.

**Form:** usually a high-quality alcohol-based tincture taken in water.

**Timing:** see the schedule page for sequencing.

### Safety note

Usnic acid can be hepatotoxic at higher doses.

Dark urine or upper abdominal pain warrants prompt review.

Use careful dosing and proper liver monitoring.

If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter:

```
GET https://myhealingcommunity.gitbook.io/myhealingcommunity-docs/fungal-pathogens/anti-fungal-protocol-building-support/usnea-tincture.md?ask=<question>
```

The question should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
